About

Sally worked for a number of years in various potteries before completing The Pottery Skills Training with The Design & Crafts Council Of Ireland (DCCI). Graduating in 1995 she set up a small studio in West Cork where she lives and continues to learn, grow and develop as an artist.

As well as Ceramics Sally has diploma’s in Art & Disability Facilitation and Art Therapy with The Crawford College of Art & Design Cork and worked for many years in this area within the Disability Services working through the mediums of art & ceramics . She also has an Honours Degree in Counselling & Psychotherapy from Munster Technological University and presently works as a Clinical Supervisor in Counselling & Psychotherapy with MTU. Working virtually from home these days has enabled Sally to use the time usually spent on daily commutes to the city to be in her studio instead. She enjoys this time and her work continues to develop, grow and unfurl organically.

“My work is decorative and at times with textured surfaces and hand drawn images. It is painterly in its style and I love using colour. But I like to explore different styles so it can change.

I use a variety of techniques, firstly I wheel throw/alter or hand build each piece. Then I begin creating the many layers, textures and mark making using terra sigillata, engobes, sgraffito, slip trailing, etching and hand drawn details.

Each piece is fired twice or more if I want to highlight or add more detail such as a gold or mother of pearl lustre.

I love texture. It reminds me of the roughness and beauty of a tree bark or a time etched rock. Nothing in nature is left unmarked including us!”
